The Four Elements in Witchcraft and Paganism

The four elements in witchcraft and paganism are earth, air, fire, and water. Pagans and witches see them as the building blocks of nature, of magic, and of the self. Earth is the body, the home, and abundance. Air is the mind, the breath, and communication. Fire is will, passion, and change. Water is emotion, intuition, and healing. Earth and water are feminine elements, and air and fire are masculine.

Pagans and witches use the four elements in nearly every part of the craft. A circle is cast by calling each element at its quarter. An altar holds something for each one. Salt is earth, incense is air, a candle is fire, and a bowl of water is water. Herbs, stones, colors, and tools are sorted by element in their correspondences. In divination, each tarot suit has an element, and so does each sign of the zodiac. Many pagans and witches add a fifth element called Spirit, which sits at the top point of the pentagram to signify that it joins the other four together.

Circle casting is the pagan and witchcraft practice of making a temporary sacred space for ritual, spellcasting, or meditation. The circle holds the energy raised inside it and keeps unwanted energy out. Calling the quarters is inviting the four elements into the circle, one at each direction. It is also known as calling the corners or calling the watchtowers. Pagans and witches cast the circle and call the quarters at the start of a ritual, and release both at the end.

An elemental altar is an altar arranged to draw on the power of the four elements in witchcraft and paganism. Each element's objects are set in its direction, with earth in the north, air in the east, fire in the south, and water in the west. Many pagans and witches set something for Spirit in the center. A pentagram or pentacle is often used to symbolize the fifth element.

Elemental correspondences are the colors, directions, seasons, tools, herbs, and stones that belong to each element. Pagans and witches turn to them for spell ingredients, altar ideas, and sabbat gifts. Each element also has a symbol, a triangle that points up for fire and air and down for water and earth.

Elemental spirits are the spirits of earth, air, fire, and water. In witchcraft and paganism, they are also called elementals. Gnomes and dwarves are spirits of earth, and sylphs and fairies are spirits of air. Salamanders and dragons are spirits of fire, and undines, nymphs, and merfolk are spirits of water. Some pagans and witches call them as guardians of the quarters, and honoring them is a kind of spirit work.
